Hearts of Iron IV tựa game thuộc thể loại chiến lược thời gian thực lấy bối cảnh chiến tranh thế giới thứ hai kéo dài từ 1936-1948. Người chơi sẽ vào vai người đứng đầu của một quốc gia, từ những cường quốc đứng đầu thế giới như Liên Xô, Đức, Mỹ, Anh, Pháp đến những quốc gia nhỏ bé ở tận châu Phi và châu Mỹ. Điểm hay của game là cho phép bạn thay đổi lịch sử thế giới theo ý muốn của mình, điều mà rất ít tựa game chiến thuật lấy đề tài Thế Chiến thứ hai làm được.
